Our Story

Steve's Backroom a taste of the Middle East housed behind a quarter-block long yellow awning on Kelly Road in Harper Woods, Michigan, started 31 years ago based on the pastry baking skills of Grandpa Bechara Cueter. It all began as a small bakery and now encompasses a wholesale and retail grocery business as well as a restaurant.

It was the idea of Cueter's daughter, Marie Therese, a native of Damascus, Syria and her Lebanese born husband, Stephen Kalil. They decided Grandpa Cueter's wonderful homemade pastries deserved to be shared with more than friends and family. After they started wholesaling, thats when things really grew. The small bakery was no longer large enough to service the increase in volume. Fortunately the building next door was for sale. With the expansion cam a brand new kitchen and warehouse facilities.

The restaurant started in 1988 as a charming little eatery tucked beyond blue cafe doors at the rear of the retail store, in response to customers request. Instead of tearing down the small bakery kitchen they decided to do just what their customers were requesting and used that kitchen to service the restaurant. Steve's late wife, who preferred to be called by her second name, Therese, oversaw the entire restaurant and retail operation.

People from all over and all ages patronize the restaurant, some even come regularly from as far as Ohio.  When Steve's backroom was just the bakery & retail store they drew more ethnic customers. But not today with the expansion of the wholesale business more and more people realize that Mideastern food is healthy. It's generally low in cholesterol, except for red meat dishes of course and the lentil soup has lots of iron in it.

Steve's Backroom is now expanding out side of just Michigan and Ohio, but to anywhere the internet reaches. You will soon be able to order our delicious sweets and fresh fare online. But for now you will just have to browse through the online catalog and call us toll free to place an order.
